Gladys Ruby Keene Reed

MAVISDALE, Va.Gladys Ruby Keene Reed, 84, of Mavisdale, Va., went to be with the Lord, May 7, 2007 at her home suffering from an extended and courageous battle with Bipolarism and Dementia. Born April 3, 1923 in Buchanan County, Va., she was the daughter of the late Luther M. and Bessie Presley Keene.

She resided in Mavisdale, Va., her entire life. She was a member of the first graduating class of Garden High School. She was a member of the Garden United Methodist Church, Oakwood, Va. and also attended the Garden Baptist Church for several years with her late husband, Kyle. Mrs. Reed was a retired postmaster of 28 years succeeding her late father, Luther.

She joins in heaven her parents, Luther M. and Bessie Presley Keene; brothers, Rufus and Bill Keene; and her beloved husband of eight years: Kyle Reed.

Gladys leaves behind: One daughter: Janis and husband Kyle Meadows, Mavisdale, Va.; one stepdaughter: Helen and husband Fred Elkins, Lake City, Fla.; one sister: Edith Honaker, Mavisdale, Va. She also leaves behind a devoted, loving grandson who adored his “Mammaw,” James David Meadows, Johnson City, Tenn.; a very special caregiver of six years: Charlotte Varney, Keen Mountain, Va., and other wonderful caregivers for the past two years: Nancy Wilcox, Bonnie Dye, Maxine Perry and Caroline Street, and Carol Meadows, close family friend who was so good to Gladys and special friend, Jackie Keen.

Funeral services for Gladys Ruby Keene Reed will be conducted Thursday, May 10, 2007 at 1:00 p.m. at the Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Lester Frank, the Rev. Stan Parris and the Rev. Jim Fuller officiating with burial to follow in the Greenhills Memory Gardens, Claypool Hill, Va.

Friends may call at the Grundy Funeral Home Chapel Wednesday (today) at 6:00 p.m. with a Song Service at 7:00 p.m.

Active pallbearers will be: Fred Meadows, David Meadows, Johnny Keen, Michael Whitt, Fred Elkins and Timothy Shortridge.

Honorary pallbearers will be: Dr. Clint Sutherland, Special Care Hospice Employees, Scott Whitt, Friendship Home Medical Employees and very close friends: Pauline Nuckles, Jackie Keen, Donald Fletcher, Larry Boyd and Sherman Jackson.
